Artist's Comments

This was created with extruded clay for the most part, with hand shaped areas of blue. The blue areas are mica loaded, so some of the patterns on there are actually mica shift. This is just one egg, spun around so you can see around it.

This is up for sale at my Art Fire page: [link]

these are awesome! it's making me think of clinket (sp - native alaskan art) you should make faces or animals out of the shapes!

Let me know if you get sales from Art Fire....looked tempting, but I don't know if they actually get traffic, even etsy is pretty slow.

Y'know, I see what you're talking about. I didn't even think of it because nearly all of that art I've seen was very thick lines with red as highlights, but I have seen some with blue, green or yellow instead. (I framed someone's collection, they had a bunch of 'em as limited edition prints, very nice stuff)

Mica shift is done with a certain type of clay. It's polymer clay that's loaded with mica particles, you align them with a pasta machine, embed some sort of pattern (in the other egg I posted I did a vine and flower pattern) shave off the raised areas with a blade, and the pattern remains because the mica particles were disturbed by the stamping. An example in my gallery is this:[link] Even though it looks like those stars are embedded in the clay, it's perfectly smooth. It's a really neat technique, and a pain in the ass to get a large area of it correct.

Yeah, I'm a bit skeptical, but I like that I don't have to pay to submit artwork, just when it's bought.

Well I am about to go back to ebay, my sales are drying up on Etsy....but I suspect that is the economy, and that things will not be looking alot better for me on Etsy, and I HATE Etsy's fees being based on the priceof the object, even if it doesn't sell.

I think they got that from Ebay, the whole listing fee being based on the price of the item thing. If nothing else, maybe you should have your stuff up at Etsy and FireArt just for more exposure.

I saw that your tutorial was sold a few times, that's pretty neat.

Both the dragon and the egg tutorials have sold there, and the gal that translated them both into adobe for me has the egg one listed on her polymer clay site, and that is getting some nice sales, but a heafty listing fee (half the price of what it sells for) but as I used to give my tutorials away for free, and will tell anyone who asks about any technique I use, I really don't feel bad about that.

that's really awesome! just knowing it's flat and yet has the 3d pattern in it... possibilities abound!

Ah, I should clarify, that ONLY the blue is mica shift. Those lines in the black are fully there. However, some of the swirly bits on the blue really are flat.
